Contracts
@ General forum

Hi,

In May (When I was 16) I signed up to a Gym, apparently signing a 6 month contract. I was enjoying myself until I lost my source of income to pay for it in which I cancelled my direct debit through my online banking after 2 months of being a member.

I received a letter this morning claiming that I am in arrears and owe them 2 months worth of subscription despite being unaware of this after cancelling my direct debit and not using the gym.

I rang them up today and they told me I cannot cancel this 6 month subscription and have to pay the debt within 2 days otherwise they will hand me over to debt collectors.

I am wondering if there is any way of me wriggling out of this one using my age as i'm now 17. I have read online that people have used excuses like it is unethical for a 16 year old to stay legally bound to a contract of this type. Is it against the law for them to not allow me to cancel it despite me being a minor?

I was told i cannot cancel it until the 6 months are up on the phone.

Any help appreciated! Thanks in advance!
