crashing on inferno/nuke

Basically for whatever reason my source is crashing on nuke and inferno, once it gets to "sending client info" it pops up with

"RUNTIME ERROR! the program "program files/steam/hl2.exe" has decided to terminate itself in an unusual way "

...or something like that, and i have to task manager delete process as source becomes non responsive.

Ive tried to reinstall display drivers/gfx drivers, close unnecessary processes, load source with no launch options, verified game cache, and defragment cache files (via steam).

A few people ive spoken to say that they've encountered this problem before but cant remember how they fixed it, so any advice would be appreciated before i end up reinstalling or w/e.
