May's Cadred CS:S Top Ten
@ Spotlights channel

Cadred's Top Ten Rankings are back for May in Counter-Strike: Source.

We've kept exactly the same rules and regulations; Fifteen votes will go into each month's rankings, ten of which are from the previous month's top ten teams, and five of which are from our panel members, who will vote every month.

The points system remains simple: a first place vote earns that team 10 points, 9 points are awarded for second place, and so on. On page two you can read who the panel members are, and see their thoughts and opinions on this month's rankings.

Vincent "Freekje" Vanloo

Vincent has been around the CS:S scene since it began and is a well known and established personality in the BENELUX scene.

Although effectively retired, Vincent utilises a lot of his time fulfilling his role as an admin for CS:S helping to run tournaments for E-sports Heaven and has been integral to the smooth running of all competitions so far.

"I'll start with the obvious, if sypher doesn't make it in this top10 then there is a massive conspiracy going on !! This month highlight for me wasn't an event or a team re-appearing in the scene. It was the 30P lan movie never have I felt the urge so much to boot the game up after seeing a source movie. That said, it has been kinda a slow month for source. HPE updates, yeah they aren't coming anymore are they...

And sir carmac can go troll another community with his CSS@IEM tweets. Team-wise there was a lot of activity though, 2 teams out of the previous top10 called it a day, while others have brought in new blood. It feels like a lot of teams are bunking up for ESWC, which, next to cph games, should be the event this year, just a shame we can't toy with 1.6 players. Event wise we had the Iberian EPS, finally bringing a proper league to Spain & Portugal. And in Denmark we had the blast, where DSrack managed to place above SpeedGaming, two teams who I think can do damage in the European Scene."

Richard Lewis

Richard comes from a journalistic background and has covered e-sports in print, on radio and television having worked for such organisations as GotFrag and CGS. He is the current content manager of Cadred where he contributes a weekly e-sports column. He was last year’s captain of Team UK in the ClanBase Nations Cup, although now he retired from playing.

He now concentrates on writing. Over the years he worked for Zboard, xciteuk, Infused and 4kings. These days he chooses to solely focus on his writing within the gaming industry.

"It's been a quiet one hasn't it folks? The only thing of note that happened this month was mTw's surge to their second EPS title in a row, seeing off pretenders Gamed.DE in style to cement their spot as the number one German team. For those who have been in hiding the biggest news story of the month was the addition of Richard 'shox' Papillon to the already fearsome VeryGames roster, an addition that looks set to improve on their chances of retaining the number one spot for many months to come.

Their recent match against Virus Gaming was about as one sided as they come but as mentioned in the interview with kononen yesterday the Fins weren't exactly giving it their all. Who knows, maybe it will hinder the French giants in some way having arguably the best player in the world.. Maybe.

Elsewhere we've seen the young Bo 'wantz' Vestergaard switch from uber G33kz to CPH Wolves in a move that caused a bit of a stir, those guys now have a very solid roster and will be hoping to do some damage come the Summer/Autumn LAN events, I wouldn't put it past them shocking a few people. The next month or two should be interesting if the rumour mill is speaking any truths, expect some big changes - and soon."

Emmanuel "Wave" Meunier

The latest addition to our news team brings with him an in depth knowledge of CS:S and 1.6, especially in his native France. His work covering French EPS has been integral to the continued development of the site.

He also joked that having a French person on the panel might ensure less arguments about the top ten in future, although somehow we doubt that very much.

"This month saw subtle changes in the top 10 as Verygames continue to dominate Europe and there were very few competitions to shake up the standings. Team Verygames thoroughly manhandled their closest competitor, Virus in the EMS, although most people spectating would say that Virus wasn't trying. Team 3DMAX! seems to have disappeared, leaving a spot open for newcomers to the top10. Sypher continues to impress, and with the folding of 3DMAX and roster issues with LDLC have slotted nicely into the "2nd best team in France" slot.

mTw impressed me by pulling out stellar results, winning the German EPS season and defeating CPH Wolves in the EMS whilst FM Toxic have also shown considerable improvement, though they still lag behind Epsilon for the title of "best UK team" in my opinion. Uber G33kz falls a few spots this month, with a mixed bag of results and the loss of arguably their best fragger in Bo "Wantz" Vestergaard to CPH Wolves leaving some doubt in my mind as to whether they'll be able to continue playing at the same level we've all come to expect from them. The mixed nationality Gamed.de lineup rounds out my list this month with an impressive showing at the EPS finals, although they were bested by another mixed German lineup in MTW when the money was on the line. "

Mike "Rickeh" McGhee

As the new features editor, Mike brings with him an in depth knowledge of the European scene and not just those usual suspects that everyone can claim to know about. Having started plying his trade as a news contributer, he is now part of the management team here at Cadred and contributes regularly with features.

"Much like a pubescent teenager the European scene has a habit of blowing its load way too soon, leaving plenty of awkward looks and boredom for some time afterwards.. Yes the April LAN season came rolling into town and had the entire scene hot under the collar, but just as quickly as it had started it was all over - with not much changing. May was always going to be a slow month with very little in the way of excitement, give or take an EMS match or two but it's still safe to say that VeryGames are at the top of the pile. The recent acquisition of the man known only as "shox" is likely to boost their chances of holding onto that spot, but then again RegnaM played a key part in the team and it could be the change needed for others to get a foot in the door.

Elsewhere in Europe we saw mTw storm to victory at the ESL Pro Series Finals.. Like that was even in doubt. The EMS has thrown up some interesting results but once more it seems like teams are treating the event with disdain, a sign that the delayed payment is getting to the elite? Perhaps, or it could just be that nobody can be arsed playing online.

Expect another quiet month in June before the action heats up in the build up to the ESWC, it's going to be interesting."

Ben "ben0" Balcombe

The veteran CS:S player joins the panel this month with a view to a long term move.

Having captained the former Zboard line-up Ben is no stranger to punditry having been the creator of Source Junky's UK top ten, including a strange mathematical system that only he knows and now subsequently can't remember due to brain cell loss.

Having been around since 2004 Ben did take a break from the scene but has returned with great interest.

"As expected Verygames continue their dominance of the top spot and rightly so. No team comes close and until teams step up and go toe to toe with them in terms of practice and preparation they will always be kicking as hard as 5000m world record holder Tirunesh Dibaba of Ethiopia. The 2nd spot belongs to CKRAS who disappointed fans recently by "pissing around" against top spot VeryGames. They are currently on a break which will see them come back fresh for the next set of events and comfortably hold 2nd spot due to their superb chemistry and all round teamwork, something nobody seems to pay attention to these days - VeryGames and CKRAS are proof it works guys, stick at it..

If rumours are to be believed we are likely to see some changes in German scene, which may affect the current kings of the UK Team Epsilon, although I've been out of touch for a while so who knows what's going on, last I heard Zboard were reforming! One new school side I am impressed by though is SpeedGaming who, with the recent pickup of Rene 'cajun' Bojg should be able to climb their way up the rankings in the coming months. I just hope my boy George and his German friends can do the same, winning EPS was a start lads! "

The Top 10 will continue at the start of June with the next installment.
