The favorites started to fall already back in the group stage with players like HuK, Grubby and HayprO failing to proceed to the playoffs. And in the round of 16 even more favorites fell through.
The first three matches of the day was TLO vs Dimaga, SarenS vs Brat_OK and Bischu vs SjoW. Three matches were all the players could advance. TLO was maybe the least comfortable one with not only having problems with his carpal tunnel but also from jet lag after participating at MLG last weekend. It showed that he wasn’t in the best of shape when he lost 2-1 to DIMAGA, and somehow the power house of TeamLiquid don’t have a player in the ro8.
The match between SarenS and Brat_OK was won by Brat_OK 2-0, but the first match lasted for 47 minutes before someone managed to pull a victory. Brat_OK had the lead almost the entire match, but he refused to do a real attack until he knew he would win.
Bischu vs SjoW was a match between not only two countrymen, but also teammates from Team Dignitas. SjoW had just like TLO just participated in MLG, but he hasn’t shown any weak signs so far this tournament and it didn’t show against Bischu either. He won quite convincingly against his teammate 2-0 and is now 8-0 in this tournament.
The second wave of players who played was where the real upsets started to happen. Two of the favorites to win the event played in this “wave”, Sen and Kas, but neither managed to pull it through, both losing 1-2 to their opponents.
The match of the talents was between elfi and Jimpo who both played quite convincingly in the group stage, were especially elfi shined. And it was never really a question which of the two players who would advance with the play elfi showed both yesterday and in today’s match. The Finnish protoss won 2-0.
As stated above, both Kas and Sen lost 1-2. Kas was against the newest addition of Swedish SC2-players to rise, Seiplo. Sen on the other hand met the winner of the match no one wanted to win yesterday between Brat_OK and Stephano. Stephano ended up winning that match even though he clearly didn’t want to even saying “no” before leaving after defeating the Russian Terran. In the end though it showed that he had to reason to be scared when he defeated Sen 2-1 only losing to an insane baneling attack on the second map.
The two last matches to be played were NaDa vs Mana and Morrow vs Welmu. If you looked at who had the favorit status you would guess that both NaDa and MorroW would advance to the round of 8.
The match between NaDa and MaNa was streamed on the main stream by TotalBiscuit and Apollo, and there was no ending the praises that MaNa got when he defeated the Korean terran 2-0 in two impressing matches. He outclassed the Korean legend, and is all of a sudden sailing up as one of the underdogs who actually can win this tournament
The last match, the one between MorroW and Welmu didn’t end like the Finnish fans wanted with MorroW taking the 2-1 victory after defending a 6 gate timing on the last map.
