I catch up with Aroppuu on the upcoming V3 of Cadred
Hello Aroppuu can you introduce yourself to the readers
Hi everyone (haven't used that one in a while)!
My name is Teijo Laine, and I'm the technical supervisor here at Cadred. Basically all the technical stuff goes through me and I'm also the one who develops the website. I'm currently studying computer science at Helsinki University of Technology and working for the summer as a programmer at Nokia Siemens Networks.
How much time a week are you spending on v3, have you a planned release date?
Weekly I spend probably 15 hours for Cadred, of which maybe 10 hours goes to programming. Rest goes to management etc.
I've been developing the new site from scratch since January or February. The site has been coming along quite nicely, but there's still lot to do. We are planning to release the new site at the end of summer (so in a few months). I want the site to be polished before it gets out, meaning that not all the stocked features may have been implemented but all that'll be released will be top notch quality.
We'll be also having a closed beta test for the most active site users before the release. So those who contribute, will get the chance to try out all the stuff before others. What we want is ofcourse the feedback on what needs to be improved before public release."
What new and improved features can users expect?
The site will be something completely different (like they'd say in Monty Python) from the general clan sites or communities. We can't naturally tell all the sweet stuff that'll be coming out, but I promise there will be a lot of stuff you have never seen anywhere before (on gaming sites or any site in general).
What I can tell you is that in addition to all the new awesome features we'll provide all the stuff you'd expect from a big community site. All the old features will be available and those you'd expect to find, like files/demos section (which we currently don't have here at v2). All that old v2 stuff will be provided in a completely new way that'll make Cadred easily the most versatile gaming site ever made. We have also improved the community support and people can really publish their own content through their profiles. Naturally big improvements are coming to the ability to interact with other visitors on the site.
To summarize: the next generation Cadred will be something you've never seen, heard or thought before. There will be no competitors for the new community platform.
How did you get into web coding?
In high school I started trying out PHP and MySQL, but since I didn't have any programming experience or teaching I was pretty terrible at it. Finally when I got to the university I got some taste of the real programming. After that I started to get the right mindset for programming and my web (and general) programming skills improved rapidly. During the past year my skills have improved considerably. A year ago when I started (continued) making Cadred v2 I wouldn't have had any chance at making the stuff I make now. I recommend programming to anyone who likes computers and likes to create stuff. It won't be easy but it's really rewarding when you get the stuff working.
Do you play games yourself?
Yeah I love to play good games. Recently I just haven't had enough time to play (nor a good game). I bought Supreme Commander immediately when it got released and I enjoyed it for a few weeks but it doesn't suit my timetable because you can't predict how long the games will take. It might be 5 minutes or 3 hours. Currently I'm waiting for the Unreal Tournament 3 to be released. The fast pace would probably suit me better, as an old TFC player I'm also waiting for TF2 but I doubt if it will be ever released.
Where do you see cadred.org in 1 year?
Statistics seem to predict that Cadred would probably be at least 3 times bigger in one year. That doesn't contain the fact that the new (unrivalled) site will be released pretty soon, and I hope it will increase the community size considerably and reduce the gap between our user base and those sites' that have been around for over 5 years (but that don't really provide anything new). Our quest is to provide the best gaming related site to people and I believe our team has the dedication to do it.
Thanks for the interview, anything else?
If you have ANY ideas regarding the feature improvements or additions to the next site, please post them to the V3 forums. Also if you are interested in the site development please contact me via IRC (Aroppuu @ ircnet/quakenet). New (truly motivated) developers (and staff) are always welcome.
Because SK-gaming went to release image material from their new website I had to go a step further. They had a shot from their registeration form. I decided to take it a bit further. Behold: the login label of Cadred V3 (development version).
