Yet another record from the boys at MLG that have failed to disappoint lately in their last two events, both breaking the previous event's record. Sundance promised Anaheim to be one of the largest e-sports events in history, and he kept that promise.
Many people were a bit weary as to how much truth was in the statement when Sundance, MLG's CEO, claimed that MLG Anaheim was something to expect. During the event he tweeted out that MLG had "shit on every viewing record", but the crowds still were a bit skeptical about the numbers. Released today straight out of New York, the numbers are in. Below you can see our good friend Katie Goldberg, head of the corporation's marketing and communications, drop the numbers in a TL;DR format below:
MLG Anaheim Statistics:
By the Numbers for the Weekend – June 8-10:
~More than 4.7 million unique online viewers over the weekend
~More than 2.2 million unique online viewers on Championship Sunday
~437,000 peak concurrent online viewers
~More than 5.7 million hours of video consumed
~More than 20,000 in-person spectators
MLG Anaheim reached nearly 450,000 concurrent viewers, making their grand total for the entire weekend peaking over 4,700,000 unique online viewers with over 5,700,000 hours of taped content throughout the event; is this a sign that e-sports is truly growing mainstream and is being recognized by the mass public, or was this just a fluke because the Brood War guys transferred and everyone tuned in to watch them play? Time will tell next month at the MLG Arena which brings it back to NYC where the top players in the world will once again butt heads. For now, let's consider this a positive step in the right direction. Below if an infographic if you so choose to view it.
