As the HomeStory Cup is finally good and well underway, all the errors have been ironed out and the players are playing at their best the first major upset is in the books.
Hailing from the Austrian wilderness of the Alps Monchi was up against the seemingly impossible-to-beat IM Mvp. A game which would be so one-sided on GSL it would be silly. Or would it be? Mvp was in for a roller coaster ride alongside the up and comer Protoss.
In game one Mvp seemed like he was totally on the right track to bounce back from his earlier shaky performance against the American qualifier Golden, who took a map off the undisputed GSL champion in their best of three, but lost the other 2 maps narrowly to give Mvp the 2-1 win. As both players went somewhat defensive and settled for economy Mvp's early aggression was easily shut down. However Monchi's nerves really showed, as he did an awkward-at-best timing push which ended up not only being shut down easily, but also costing him the game, as Mvp counter-dropped in Monchi's main and devastated him.
The tides turned however when the pressure for Monchi was gone. In game two Monchi held off Mvp's 1-1-1 and continued into a 2base zealot-storm timing attack. With Mvp's early army in tatters Monchi had little to no opposition, and was able to force a third map out of Mvp.
Mvp was flabbergasted to say the least.
Everything was possible, but the risk Monchi was willing to take for this game was something Mvp was very unprepared for. Monchi sold a perfect fake, as he took an expansion on Mvp's side of the map while faking a 2base all-in. Mvp fell for the trap with eyes and ears, as he prepared for the seemingly impeding all-in. It must have been an incredible surprise when he found out that not only did Monchi have more units than expected, but his upgrades were through the roof, clocking in at 2-2 and having storm to back that up. Mvp had literally no means to defend his base at all.
As the game finished High-Fives sounded throughout the venue, as the crowd that has gathered outside of the apartment started chanting and singing Monchi's name. Mvp is now fighting for his tournament life in the first group stage out of everything, something which is uncommon for Mvp even in the Code S groups.
