The CPL Shuts Down
@ Scene news channel

The Cyberathlete Professional League has come to the end of the road, and has decided to shut down for good.

Many have seen it coming for a while now, and not helped by poor press such as the boycott of the G7 teams on recent CPL events, but only today have CPL finally bitten the bullet and closed down once and for all.

Launched over 10 years ago, the CPL became one of the biggest names in eSports, famed for showcasing some of the best teams and players from around the globe.

Though the end of CPL has seemed more and more likely for a while now, coming only six months after the fall of WSVG, it remains to be seen if other global tournaments such as ESWC and Kode5 will be able to keep going as strong as ever, or indeed whether new organisations (such as the CGS) will be stepping up to fill in the gaps.

A statement from CPL said

Many thanks to all of the sponsors and partners that helped CPL establish the groundwork for professional video game competitions. Their vision and pioneering spirit should always be remembered.

CPL Staff also added that "The CPL intends to continue to pay the World Tour prizes."
