I bring you the second instalment in my Team Fortress 2 interview series . Today I bring you an interesting and in depth interview with none other than the renowned Demoman ‘Byte’ from Weapons of the Rebellion, who just won ETF2L player of the season award.
In case you missed it the last interview was with Bybben from 4 Kings, you can find the article
here.
To start could you give an introduction, who are you, who do you play for and your class etc...
"Hi! My name is Ahmad I'm 23 years old (soon to be 24 :( )! Been playing TF2 since September 18th 2007. Started off solo player, playing dustbowl 24/7 for god knows how long then eventually joined ^wotr^ the only clan I've been in so far in my TF2 career. My favourite class is Demoman, and I enjoy just about every other class."
I think it is safe to say you didn’t start gaming with Team Fortress 2. What is your history in video games, and how do you think your past complements your current TF2 performance?
"You're correct Mr nubonamission! My first game was Quake 1 really and from then on I got hooked into the art of aiming bunny hopping and having to react fairly quickly. Since then I've divulged into Half-life, Team Fortress Classic, Counter-Strike: Source, Day of Defeat and now Team Fortress 2. My favourite game so far has to be Day of Defeat as it was a combination of just about everything for me.
All of the games I've mention help me to play combat in whatever class in TF2, the elements of 1 v 1 and counter-attack, defence and so on. The only thing that cannot be grasped from these games is the sheer intelligence required in TF2."
What is your attitude towards training, do you really apply yourself to improve or do you just relax and play?
"The way I see it is, you have to earn the respect of being able to play at a high level to be relaxed and play at that level. So in simple English that means, you have to graft really hard if you want to succeed in this game especially, then when you acquire the intelligence and combat skills in the game you can relax and play naturally. I'm always trying to improve, the bad thing about me as a person is that I'm a perfectionist."
And how do you train your skill in Team Fortress 2? For instance how much time do you spend training, what sorts of game types do you train with, i.e. mixes, 1v1, public etc.?
"One secret which I believe not many know about in TF2 is that, if you know how to play the majority of the classes (and I mean properly in terms of combat tactics, positioning, awareness and anticipation etc) then you can master your own class a lot faster. For me as a Demoman, when i play public I always try to think of the class in front of as if I was playing it and what would I do. This then leads me to believe that the "worst case scenario" may occur and I'll end up dying. The core of how i play Demoman is based on public play, that’s how I learnt Demoman, in this manner. Why? you may ask well when you play on public servers you have to endure the term "expect the unexpected" that means you could see a flying Pyro being ub3red, or a sniper 600 miles away yet at the same time an engineer putting an Sentry Gun in the weirdest of places. All of these scenarios many more make me get better individually as a demo."
"I’m always asking the question to the opponent "You tell me, where would I put stickies to kill you?"
How do you keep things fresh and in the moment when you have played the same map x hundred times, and been through the same movements many times before?
"That’s one of the weaknesses in a Demoman, the map is never going to change (well it may do slightly but nothing to a big impact), which leaves me having to think of new positions to lure enemies into thinking it’s clear. Every week I’m seeing Demomen place stickies where I’d place them, this makes me feel that I’m not improving so instinctively, I just go either on a LAN server or public server and start playing, while I’m in the moment I see some random player come from the weirdest of places, yet when I think about it, when people start to think like this public player they could all come "this" particular way and that’s when I start piping a different route, it’s based on the quote I used before "expect the unexpected," so that question to the opponent "You tell me, where would I put stickies to kill you?" rather than me say "Where have I put my stickies to kill you.""
Do you think you are at your peak in terms of performance at the moment, or do you think you have more to show?
"I believe I’ve always got more to offer, I don't believe I can ever reach peak performance. All the time in pickups or officials I’m constantly being ganged up so that i die before anything else, sometimes I survive and win sometimes I die within two seconds, this is just one thing that I need to improve on, there's plenty more. I haven't been known for inconsistency however it does take me a few rounds to get properly warmed up so again being able to adapt quickly is another thing I need to learn and many other things."
Something people are always interested in, what peripherals are you using, and more specifically what mouse and sensitivity are you using?
"This is the funniest part of the interview now, believe it or not when TF2 came out I was using a trust mouse worth £3 which had 3 buttons, and a £3 keyboard. It was only until i33 I got a new Mouse being the Microsoft Habu (which is basically the Razer Copperhead just endorsed by Microsoft same specs though). I'm still using the same keyboard though! ^_^ lol. I don't use any scripts or config's, my mouse sensitivity in windows is set 7 (from the left) and windows acceleration is turned off, my in-game sensitivity is 4.8."
"I was using a trust mouse worth £3 which had 3 buttons, and a £3 keyboard
What are the major upcoming LAN tournaments for you, and how are you personally and as a team preparing for these events?
"Well to be honest, I don't consider myself in the league of LAN's as it were. By that I mean I don't really focus or have a particular interest in LAN tournaments, if one does come across to me and I think I’m available then I’ll try my best to play in it. Suppose the major ones are PC Gamer and CGS hopefully, although due to real life circumstances i might not be good enough to play as Demoman when it comes to these tournaments, whenever they are. At the moment team UK is practicing every Wednesday and Sunday, and have a pretty strong unit. Its more about adapt to everyone's game play rather than being skilled and owning all (as in TF2 that’s impossible at a high level.)"
With large cash prize tournaments on the horizon, how much further do you see TF2 rising in the e-sports scene in the future?
"I can see it rising to a good standard but never like COD4 or CS:S, man will always love to kill using a gun in video games. However TF2 will takes ages to wilt due to its comedy factor and also intelligence factor."
What does it mean to you to be playing under the ^wotr^ banner?
"It is a great honour, I never pictured myself to ever join wotr, but at the time Bvster asked me to come for a trial and Xman being a wise leader knew i had potential so to play under the most successful English clan in Europe, I’m very happy.
"I can get fairly angry when something has panned out due to some other team member messing up my "routine"
The best part about it is that at the end of the day we are all mates and speak to each other like friends rather than clan mates."
A lot of lower skilled players and teams experience rage and frustration when developing, is this still a part of high level play? And if so how do you and your teammates deal with it?
"I can safely say that for me that it is not the same, I don't do rage to be fair, I can get fairly angry when something has panned out due to some other team member messing up my "routine". I mainly experience anger when I’m being ganged and targeted by more than 2 people, I can name plenty clan that do it even top clans, but it frustrates me when they have an objective and it’s based on me, because it means I don't get to play but my team get to slaughter and kill! It's as if I’m "taking one for the team!" ^_^. When i get ganged up on, the beauty of Demoman is that he can defend himself, so when I’m being targeted a lot by the opponents I start playing defensive. All it requires is the ability to keep your cool and patience when under frustration and anger!"
How do you compare TF2 to other competitive games out there?
"In terms of skill and combat its good but nothing like Quake or UT3 and so on... However for intelligence this has to be one of the most cleverest fps games I’ve played so far. So much anticipation, awareness and 'brainz' is required to be good at this game."
What is your opinion on the currently controversial question: should major tournaments change to Demoman limit 1?
"It can be counter-acted EASILY if people sat down, thought of a plan of how to remove two Demomen.
"I really can understand why people are for the Demoman limit 1, I really can, what with the combination of 8 grenades spam 16 stickies, it's a total mess. However it's a tactic, which is part of the game. It can be counter-acted EASILY if people sat down, thought of a plan of how to remove two Demomen. As a Demoman I
think two Scouts is out of order (if you’re going to restrict two Demomen), why? well they are faster than me, and they have a large big double baralled shotgun which at middle/short range will annihilate me, so why can't two scouts be restricted to one?
As i've mentioned before it's just an excuse for others, as its too difficult to find a tactic to counter it. Many people say it makes the game spammy and boring? Well when I'm in a semi-final or final i really couldn't give a monkeys banana bumbum! (:D?) I'm there to win a game to represent my Country/Clan. I'll finish off with this, you remember in Euro 2004 Greece in the final's...they won 1-0. How did they? They played really boring and defensive, did they care? hell no after 90minutes they were overjoyed that they won. Yet when Italy play with a 5 man defence they got creamed by Holland in Euro 2008, that again is defensive and boring yet they lost? What makes that different from two Demomen?"
How do you feel about the recent changes to the game brought about by Valves patching, including the changes to ‘cp_well’ and the new Pyro class weapons?
"Excellent idea with well to be honest, has made the game quicker, not as quick as granary but more tactical and quicker, which is good as before it was a case of ub3r up outside go in as a unit hope that someone makes a mistake and so forth which is tedious and boring. As for the Pyro weapons, public wise its comical and :D I enjoy annoying public players as Pyro, just makes the game funnier. In 6v6 matches side of things I think it's still useless as before except for acting as a defensive tool to stop a ub3red heavy class coming in (assuming your team doesn’t have one), using the air compression helps push the opponent away, which I think in affect is a good use of the Pyro other than that its fairly useless."
Any thoughts on what valve might release for the upgrades to the Demoman weapons, and how it may affect the game?
"I heard that they will be nerfing the demo, which is sad, as not many people understand how hard it is to be a solid Demo to be fair and honest. Only class out of the 9 that does not have a gun which shoots bullets to a lengthy distance. I don't know what they might realise, but I’m going to assume
"not many people understand how hard it is to be a solid Demo
a sticky grenade launcher which has even more power stickies and (less in the chamber) but take longer to detonate. May even get a one-time Detonater which every Demoman has and can only be used once in one life, (a bit like the Demoman in TFC, where the Demoman had a detpack.)"
Anything you want to add, any shout-outs etc?
"Yeah, I’d like to thank Papasma for all his gaming years we've played, he's the only reason i started gaming, and I’ve never looked back. Its taught me a lot about the internet awareness anticipation many other things which i use in real life without even knowing it. Special thank you goes to Xman (Jim Maguire) for his hospitality while I’ve been in ^wotr^ is a great manager/leader. Of course a special thanks go to all my clan mates (<3 Albert :P) and all my fellow community friends!"
Well, many thanks for taking the time to do this interview, it has been a pleasure and I would like to wish you all the best for the future.
