PCGS: Talking with Wlv
@ PC Gamer Showdown - TF2 channel

I arrived at the PC Gamer Showdown mid afternoon today; I have been meeting and talking with many of the top players from the best TF2 clans in Europe such as 4 Kings and TLR which has been a real pleasure.

Amidst the initial LAN chaos with everyone setting up their systems I managed to conduct a quick interview. I pulled Rob “Wlv” Rendle aside for a few minutes and asked him a few questions about his thoughts on the event.

How does it feel to have arrived here?

It’s a real relief to finally get here, after all the stress we have had because of having to lose four soldiers to real life circumstances in a short space of time. Obviously I wish all the best to them, but it’s been a shambles preparing for the event.

When you get here and you have 6 brand new AMD PC’s waiting for you, with top spec, it feels kind of special getting all that support when a lot of our players have come from games like Team Fortress Classic. So it feels really good to be here, I have met up with all the 4Kings guys and it is a special event just because of the people who are here.

Why are you attending this specific event?

Well, the £15000 prize money draws you here, but also because it is being covered and sponsored by one of the biggest magazines in Europe, maybe the world. I hope to push the game forward and get it seen at big events and do my part for the scene… and of course to have a really good time!

Do you feel you have prepared enough for this event?

We haven’t had the same line up that we have had for a lot of TLR’s history, but we all know the tactics. We feel we have a chance to win versus all the teams at this event, since it comes down to the moment, and its all down to the opponents’ mistakes and how you capitalise on those mistakes.

What are your expectations for the other teams attending this event, want to make some predictions?

It’s going to be close whatever happens. I think Interrobang has PC’s now, and there is of course TCM and 4 Kings and all those teams can give us a run for our money. I don’t expect any easy wins, I expect most games to be close. It’s hard to put my expectations into words, but I expect the best from my team TLR and from the other teams.

It's a rare thing to get all 4 or 5 best teams together at one event, and be able to have a beer with people you have known online for a long time. It’s not exactly emotional but it is a very special occasion and it will be really something for the people who can watch these games.

Do you think the fact this is at LAN rather than online will bring any unexpected results?

Yeah, definately. I think that TLR and TCM have a big advantage over 4 Kings and Interrobang because of the fact we have gotten to finals at LAN a few times before. When you go to a LAN you don’t expect the little changes that affect the game, so if you were to ask me which team I didn’t want to face till the final round it would be TCM because of their LAN experience.

Is there anyone you are looking forward to playing most?

Couldn’t really pick a single team, but it would be nice to see TCM in the finals and get revenge for the past LAN’s. But it’s going to be great to play any of these great teams.

What kind of finish are you looking for at this event?

Ideally we want first, same as every other team at this event. But I would be happy with a top 2 finish and I believe we are capable of it.

Why do you think there have been not as many teams as I might have expected considering the big prize pot?

It’s because of the BYOC, and because it’s in the UK. It’s really hard to get to BYOC if you don’t have anyone to support you, and its really expensive to fly out here and get back. There were three teams from Finland alone such as k1ck and teams from other countries who would have made it otherwise, if the competition was in central Europe we would have seen maybe the top 20 or 30 teams show up.

Anything else you want to add?

I like to say good luck to Wai who has his medical for the RAF coming up, and to every other team who has managed to get here. So far it’s been a really good event, looking forward to getting more pissed.

Thanks for taking the time to talk to me Rob, good luck setting your PC’s up and all the best in the tournament!
