MaxLAN: Interview with ph0s
@ MaxLAN 2008 channel

Ten minutes after mTw were defeated in the final at the hands of the French, I got the chance to sit down with Andreas “ph0s” Wicht to talk about him and his team, as well as this and other events.

First off, commiserations on losing the final, how confident were you throughout that game?
When we went into the game we thought it would be a very tough game because the upper bracket final was a double overtime so we knew they were very strong and we knew we were strong. We didn’t under-estimate them of course and they fought very bravely back. We had it in our hand in the last round but our concentration was gone and we just gave it away.
As you said, both your games against VeryGames had to go into overtime, do you rank them as equally skilled to yourselves?
Well the outcome says that VeryGames is ranked above us, but when you play twice against the same opponents and you go into overtime in both games you can say you are nearly equal and they just had better form on the day, so we played them tomorrow the outcome could be completely different.
As you know Germany and France have traditionally been slated with “onliner” comments, how do you feel to see a German and a French team in this final, and to see recent results such as your win at SLAP, Crack’s win at TeX.dk, and so on?
In our case we knew that we weren’t onliners because we are all very experienced players, nooky and I for example have a very long 1.6 history with big tournaments played and so on, and so because we were new to source nobody knew us, and so these online accusations came up pretty fast. We just had to prove it on lan. And we did it.

I am very happy to see that the teams who are very strong online are also very strong offline which implicates that more and more players and teams are starting to play professionally and clean, for example Crack and Reason.
Looking at your second place finish, I’m sure it’s a spot lower than you would have been aiming for – are you satisfied with your performances, in particular against VeryGames both times?
Due to the fact that we had really bad trouble with the hotel on the first night, the result of that was just three hours sleep after a twelve hour journey, so the performances yesterday were very good in the situation. The performances today were good as well, for example the win against Team Alternate where we fought back was very good, after going down 11-4 in the first half.

VeryGames played very concentrated so every mistake you made was punished, that was the main difference between the other teams and VeryGames. With such bad concentration in the end the mistakes got more frequent, and so that’s why we lost, we didn’t play our A game.
Despite those losses you’ve still had a successful few weeks, including this event, can we expect to see you stick as a team and start looking towards the next season of LAN events outside Germany?
Definitely, because we’ve got great team chemistry, and it’s really fun playing in this team, we’ve got a great mixture of characters and players with their different play styles – we just fit pretty well. If there aren’t any unforeseen circumstances we will keep on playing in this line-up. The next event we’ve got are the EPS finals in Germany, and after that we are playing just online games in the EMS, offline events aren’t planned yet, until there are new announcements of tournaments.

Shoutouts to my team, they’re great guys, and we had a very good time during the last weeks, and of course shoutouts to our sponsors too, and shoutouts to VeryGames for these great matches.
