i36: Deman interviewed
@ i36 CoD4 channel

In the final news post I am going to do from i36, I speak to Deman from QuadV.

Deman has been a huge help to the CoD4 scene, especially that CoD4 doesn't have any CoDTV. He has put in countless hours into the scene, shoutcasting games here, there and everywhere. With most of the games being shoutcasted this event by Deman, I went and spoke to him about the event, as well as a few other factors.

Welcome Deman. The i36 CoD4 tournament, how have you found it as a CoD4 tournament compared to other i-series?

Compared to i35 far far superior. We have had some brilliant games in the knock out stages, obviously you casted one with us. ReDeYe introducing to CoD4 again, he hasn't done it since CoD2. It's been a good event tournament wise, apart from the final which I am sure you are going to ask about.

Lets talk about the team who have come here. It has been mainly UK based teams and one European based team. But how would you view the competition going for that top spot?

It was good, but SpeedLink were slightly disappointing. I am sure they are saying that themselves. I thought fnatic might have been a little unlucky to get TCM on the same map again, like they did earlier on in Strike. I think if they had got another map other than Strike, TCM are good at that, they may have gone further. On the saturday especially they were playing really well. Reason Gaming were the only team that I thought could posssibly beat dignitas but it wasn't to be against TCM, they just self destructed.

The final: firstly were you expecting YoYoTech to get that far?

No, no chance. I knew of the team, vanner normally gets his team fired up doing quite well, but obviously they surpassed their own expectations. They were just happy with top 6. There were some suprising results, I mean TCM should really not have lost on Backlot to them.

But going into the final, were you expecting a repeat of the wipe wash that happened in the first encounter between YoYoTech and dignitas?

Yes I was. I even said to the stage manager don't worry this is going to be a 20 minute game. I said to you guys before the match, it's going to be a wipe wash. I mean the fact that the Winner Bracket, they beat YoYoTech 13-3! We just expected exactly the same. That said, I don't remember the last time I saw dignitas playing properly on Crossfire. Even in UKeSA they never really played with any tactics. They just run up the street. So I kind of expected it.

Were you expecting them to bring out the UZIs and the M40s?

No, they did do it in the group stages. I stood behind them and watched them as they did it with the USPs, the Pistols. You don't kind of expect that in a CoD tournament. I will say, lets try and make it interesting. Just like I've said to fnatic at previous tournaments, just like I've said at TeX to LLL and Evil Geniuses, just like I said to them at i34. So it's not something new that I've said. It's something I say to every single team and every single tournament I have been to. I said it to Pandemic and KomaCrew at AEF. It's the same thing I've said every time. Make the final interesting.

Do you think it's a bit selfish and arrogant to mess around like they did in such a big tournament, to team kill and almost let the other team win at times? Is it immature to do stuff like that?

You could say immature, I suppose grown ups would definitely see that, but it's more the arrogance of the youth. They have had it all the time, TLR, they've had it when they were in MYM, the same group of players. raz not so much so, he has been dignitas through and through. He is a machine. Jason and Danny. They are brothers! They are always going to have the arrogance in there. It kind of makes it interesting some times. But it back fired.

Going into the 2nd map, was there a point when you thought dignitas were going to make fools of themselves and lose this?

Yeah I went to the toilet at half time, Mark was in there, and I said to him, look, I really hope you lose. I really hope YoYoTech suprise you. And they really came out and did suprise them. And you could see dignitas were like, what's going on here! At 11-8, it was the only time I thought YoYoTech are starting to crumble here, and then dignitas were able to hold on and beat them.

There was quite a lot of talk about the flame that was going on between the two teams and that you and ReDeYe were... egging them on slightly. Would you say that was a fair comment?

Um, yes and no. Before the match started I said in text chat let's not have the flame and banter and binds that we had for the TCM game. I said that in chat, whether any one can prove it I don't know. Obviously when we did the commentary, they have got sound cancelling headsets on. They shouldn't be hearing too much of what is being said on the stage. I know certainly our headsets, we can't hear a word that is being said. We can't hear anything, anything. All we can hear is maybe when the crowd gets really loud, that is all we can hear. I guess there headsets were the same, I'm pretty sure they were. But it's kind of our job to get our crowd going. It's what we do. As for baiting.... no more than me and TosspoT would have done in another tournament really. I mean Tosspot probably would even go further than we did!

Keep on the subject of flaming, the game I casted with you, the TCM vs dig game, the flame in there was merging on going a step too far. Do you think something should be done about that?

I spoke to Odee before. He said to me you can turn the comments off. But why should we? That was my thought. Why should we turn them off. I know Call of Duty 1, 2, 3, well 3 was sort of by passed, 4 have always had these comments in them. I guess you could say it's part of the game, you get it in CS, it's no different really. But I guess it can go too far. I don't know, TCM were definitely a little bit agressive. It wasn't binds either, it was actual text time by certain players. We've seen it online and TosspoT actually brought it up in a UKeSA game, don't know who it was. Maybe ButtonBashers vs TCM off the top of my head. I would have to check the VODs. TosspoT mentioned it on the stream then, you would think the players would be a bit more professional, when there's a stream on they wouldn't do this, but they don't. They're kids.

Let's talk about UKeSA. How do you view the tournament as a whole in terms of CoD4. Has it been a good tournament?

UKeSA was good, apart from the last one, which I have made my views clear on on Cadred. The 22-2. And I think this tournament has kind of proved, that 22-2 against dignitas, that's not a real result really. dignitas have obviously said TCM forced them to play 4on5 but that's a whole different story anyway.

The level of competition though has been really good. Obviously fnatic vs ButtonBashers was a brilliant game, dignitas vs ButtonBashers good have been a bit better, that was 18-6, a horrible game really. But we've seen a few suprises in it and it's kind of levelled things out. Obviously the one thing is that it's just a UK tournament. So it's good for the UK scene. But it doesn't really give a fair view of the international teams.

You say it's a UK tournament, but it has ButtonBashers, fnatic, and they had TradeMark Gamers. How do you view UKeSA, should it be a UK tournament?

I can see where people are coming from, the whole point is is that it's the UK eSports Assosiation trying to be government back, just like you have in Denmark with Roskilde. They have the big Danish tournaments, purely Danish, no one else interfears with that. Same with the Germans, you have the NGL, the LAN league and German competitions. You will not get European teams in a proper German only competition. It will be Germans only, Germans wouldn't allow it. So I don't know why UKeSA would. In terms of our eSports side of things it makes it more interesting for us but yeah I can full see why it should be a UK only event, and that would pretty much put it down to dignitas winnig it easily.

A lot of people have been calling you negative, and pessimistic about the CoD4 scene as a whole, saying that it was going to die. I remember you saying in the EMS Grand Final that this was going to be the last big tournament for CoD4.

Well it was, at the time, it was before Promod sorted itself out. It was during all the DAMN/Promod malarky. So at the time it was definitely going downhill. CoD5 had just come out and people were running to CoD2 so I think it was quite fair comment at the time.

Did you see CoD4 completely dieing at the time?

It had. Considering we had just had TeX, AEF and i34 had just gone. We had had 30 teams at each event, and about 15 of these teams could have won the tournament, so in terms of competition it's no where near what it was. It's definitely on the come back, certainly, but at the time it did look like it was dead.

Do you think by TeX and OOF3 it can return to the level it once was?

It will need a lot of players to return to the game or certainly a lot of new players to come out of absolute nothingness for it to get close to it. We have Lan79, OOF3 and TeX 3 months away (bar Lan79). There is going to have to be a hell of a lot of change, but I think really, we are going to need Pandemic to come over, to put the competition back up.

What about CoD4:2 coming out in October time. Can you see people making the natural progression into that, or has CoD4 got to a stage where it is able to out live any future CoD titles that come around?

I think that being that it's made by the same people, there are high high hopes for it. Especially with Promod actually set. As far as I can tell, if it is pretty much the same game plus more then Promod should transfer across nicely. The rules are already set for the game, so it should get competition back up and running properly. There will be a lot of people that will buy the game. So I'm quite hopeful for it this time, unlike CoD5 where I was like Oh dear, I can't really see this working. I think things could transfer across nicely, and I think everyone will move across.

OK, as I have done it for everyone else so far, so I might as well do it for you. Time for the quickfire round.
