Certainly it was a shock to most when it was announced that due to some oversights from some of the squad players that the Netherlands team was to be removed from this year's ENC competition. Today we learned that there would be another team no longer competing in the event, but it was to be at their own behest.
Denmark have withdrawn from the competition, a decision that may well baffle some given the calibre of the side and the fact that they were amongst the favourites in the event. However a busy schedule seems to have forced the players to decide where their loyalties lie in what appears to be a rare clash of "club versus country".
The Team Captain, Marc 'lokke' Halgreen, had the following to say about the decision:
"This is a sad day for Danish CSS and me especially. It is with sadness in my voice I have to announce, that the Danish ENC-team will not be playing its remaining 2 matches versus UK and Russia. It has been one long struggle to keep the players motivated for ENC, and since ESEA is taking so much time people have decided to focus on their respective teams. That is also why I have been forced to reschedule all of our matches. Some of the players have been lacking extreme amounts of motivation to represent their national colours, and therefore we have been forced to withdraw ourselves from the ESL: European Nations Cup."
How this decision will be met by the ESL and how it will impact on Denmark's eligibility in future will remain to be seen, but it is a clear blow to the competition that has always been held in high regard as the national tournament of choice for CS:S players and other games besides. As always any updates will be right here on Cadred.
