OOF3: Grand Final Match Report
@ OutPost on Fire 3 CoD:4 channel

DuRuS recaps the Call of Duty 4 Grand Final between dignitas and fnatic

The Grand Final of the Call of Duty 4 OutPost on Fire 3, the game everyone has been waiting for, the game between fnatic and dignitas. And what a game we were in for! Dignitas took on fnatic coming from the losers bracket, needing to win maps. They did it with relative ease, winning both Crash (their map) and then Crossfire (fnatic’s map).

However it wasn’t all smooth. For a round by round update you can check out our live updates page here, which was updated live during the event.

The game started on Crash, with fnatic leaving the venue for a quick team talk. Corin took this as a chance to ask Steven if we could edit the fnatic configs. We bound all 5 players Mouse1 button to disconnect.

When the fnatic players finally returned, and started to run around in ready up mode, they one by one disconnected from the server, to be met by howls of laughter from not only the dignitas players but also all the admins. It was definitely worth doing.

fnatic started off quite well

Fnatic won the knife battle and chose to go defence first. With dignitas playing as attack first on Crash, they needed to try get as many rounds as possible, with defence being the easier side. But they didn’t get off to the best of starts, as fnatic won the first 2 rounds. LINQAN was clutching brilliantly again, as he won a 1on2 situation in the 2nd round. But it was the 3rd round where dignitas got their first round.

With some brilliant clutches, with a mixture of dignitas players, but always involving Stevy for fnatic, dignitas took the lead for the first time. Dignitas took this as an advantage to start laying into Stevy. “s***est player in the game” along with some other comments. Stevy was playing well but dignitas were choosing to try and get under his skin.

It was working as well; he wasn’t hitting all the shots he would usually do, though he did get a few ridiculous flick shots, and some brilliant Deagles. The first half score ended, with dignitas 7-5 up and now going to the easier sided defence.

The game carried on at the same pace it did during the first half, stupidly quickly. Neither team knew what slow play meant, as they stormed around the map armed with their SMGs. This played into the hands of dignitas, with raz and mark playing exceptionally well. Lookzor was also having a good game, after a few disappointing games earlier on.

dignitas were a lot louder than they had been in previous games

They were 10-6 up when dignitas started to push ahead even more, with mark laughing his head off as raz got the USP kill to win the round and go just 2 frags away from success in the first map. Though fnatic did pull a small come back, dignitas were able to get the final 2 rounds to clinch the map. They then moved on to Crossfire, fnatic’s maps.

Again fnatic won the knife, with Stevy getting a crazy 3 man combo that would have looked good on Assassin’s Creed in the knife round. They chose to go attack, and they were going to rely a lot upon Stevy to get the shots with the sniper.

But the simple fact was he wasn’t hitting them, at all. Dignitas were able to push hard and get around the back of the fnatic players, and mow them down like the Brits were in the first world war. But in this case (bar the obvious facts the Brits were on the wrong side), fnatic did have a few answers. They tried to get the bomb down quickly, and clutch the rounds from there, but dignitas were just too calm and strong on the retake to be concerned with that. They used flashes perfectly to neutralise Stevy for enough time to get into a position to kill him.

It also didn’t help that Stevy was missing shots that even I could have hit! Easily! Fnatic go on to use yet another clutch that maybe on another day they would have won. Morg once said to me that the reason this dignitas team are so good was because they had the ability to clutch rounds. They were doing a hell of a lot of that here, winning countless 1on2s, and rounds that frankly they shouldn’t have won.

TKs by fnatic players, dignitas getting the final kills with long range USPs, Stevy having a mare, all of this accounted towards the 8-4 half time loss. “We all know who is letting them down” chirped the dignitas players, with Stevy sitting on 4-10 on a map that heavily relied upon the sniper. But Stevy is made of tougher stuff than that, and took those comments to heart. He got two great shots followed up by some even better Deagle shots to pull fnatic back to a 2 round deficit.

fnatic had moments of brilliance

This is when the problems arose. The servers lagged out for a little bit, with 2 players facing each other and about to shoot. When the server came back dignitas got the kills on the fnatic players, but fnatic were not happy with it, at all. They were demanding a restart and play the round again. Head admin dfb was also saying that he wanted the round to be replayed.  But dignitas were not happy with this saying that they had got the kills before the lag came about. This discussion went on for a good 5 minutes, if not more. Finally dignitas had enough and chose to just play the round again.

Danny said to Paul that they were going to lose the next few rounds, and they did just that. Dignitas are a motivational team, who rely upon their motivation being high to win rounds. They won a round and then lost it because of the lag (in their eyes) and so they were slightly disheartened for the next few rounds.

Fnatic even managed to get ahead of dignitas at one stage, going 9-8 up. But dignitas came back strong, especially with BlackMane getting the fair share of sniper exchanges. Stevy didn’t get a frag in 3 rounds which really didn’t help them.  They moved on up through the scoreboard, getting the next 4 rounds to take them to a 12-9 advantage. Fnatic had to see out 3 rounds if they were going to take this game to overtime, but dignitas didn’t let that happen, winning the round to take the title.
