IEM Finals: fnatic Thwart Foxes - SK Next
@ IEM Grand Finals channel

A classic semi-final encounter is on the cards after fnatic beat WeMade FOX to set-up a match against long standing Swedish rivals SK Gaming.

WeMade FOX had been one of the surprise packages of yesterday, putting together a string of good performances including a win over SK Gaming on de_nuke. fnatic themselves had also looked strong only dropping points to Evil Geniuses in what could best be described as dubious circumstances.

The first map was de_inferno and the Koreans got off to a good start by winning the pistol to take a 3 - 0 lead. Although pistols rounds haven't been overly kind to fnatic at this event, they soon hunkered down and set about bringing back the deficit. With guns in their hands the Swedes looked imperious and they quickly established a lead with WeMade struggling. The first half ended 10 - 5 in favour of the team of last year.

Showing some spirit though FOX took the pistol again and managed to keep the exchanges even. However, with fnatic having the healthy lead they could afford to play within themselves and the comeback from wasn't going to happen. It finished 16 - 13 and the next map would be de_train.

The Swedish side started as terrorists but in the face of a series of WMF mistakes they picked up a lot of rounds, many of which were handed to them on a plate. There were numerous times that the Koreans had superior numbers, but through a combination of poor positioning, communication or just aim, they were overcome and that took its toll on morale. It finished 9-6 in favour of the offensive team at half time.

Even with poor fnatic defences on CT there was nothing they could do to rectify the situation. The map finished 16 - 12 to fnatic and WeMade looked nothing like the team of yesterday. While a win here was always going to be a tall order, it is doubtful they will be happy with the manner of the defeat.

Now all talk will be of the "big one" - a semi-final worthy as being a final of any event. SK-Gaming and fnatic, two of the biggest names in Counter-Strike, will battle it out for a place in the finals against one of the events surprise teams - Evil Geniuses or Na 'Vi.

The action begins early tomorrow - be sure to set your alarms.
