Tonight Esports Heaven plays host the voracious Team Fortress 2 community in the Sapphire Challenge, check out the bracket to see what’s in store

The Sapphire Challenge has big boots to fill in the wake of the previous competitions from Esports Heaven. In particular the excellent Sennhieser Challenge has left a lasting impression with a handful shock results and a generous sprinkling of drama, as I Don’t Know? Black romped to the final at the expense of Team Dignitas where they engineered an intense victory over three maps against TCM-Gaming. You had to be there!

The same cup template will be followed for the Sapphire Challenge, with the 128 team single elimination format being employed to increase the stakes and leave competitors no room for error. Throw another €500 winner-takes-all prize pot courtesy of the title sponsor, Sapphire, and we have all the ingredients for another superb event.

However, a community backlash has been apparent this weekend in the lead up to the tournament as a surprising number of teams have decided to stay clear, deterred and disillusioned by previous crushing defeats in the early rounds against the top seeds.

In my infinite wisdom I can see their point too, but ultimately I am disappointed by their lack of vision and disregard for the future growth and support of our relatively small scene. Think about the big picture! Of course there is plenty of scope for the tournament administration to strategise about how to better serve the teams who have chosen not to participate.
